    Total quality management and performance of International Non-Governmental Organizations in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

    The objective of this study was to examine how the implementation of Total Quality Management principles can contribute to improving the performance of International NonGovernmental Organizations in Dar es Salaam. The targeted population for this research comprised of International Non-Governmental Organizations with headquarter in Dar es Salaam. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from all 60 International Non-Government Organizations in Dar es Salaam. The study revealed that International Non-Government Organizations in Dar es Salaam are effectively implementing all eight principles of Total Quality Management. These principles include employees’ involvement, continuous improvement, focus on customers, systems and processes, strategic and systematic leadership, decision making based on facts, communication and integrated system. Also, the study confirmed that effective Total Quality Management positively predicts performance improvement of International NonGovernment Organizations in Dar es Salaam. Lastly, the study revealed barriers to Total Quality Management implementation. These barriers include those related to ineffective Management and systems which lead to the absence of ineffective performance measures and appropriate systems and processes in place. There are also barriers related to people which includes inappropriate organizational culture, resistance to change, and poorly trained workers. Lack of resource which limits investment inappropriate structures and technology is also another barrier to effective implementation of Total Quality Management. The study concludes that the Implementation of Total Quality Management contributes to improved organizational performance. It was also noted that a Strategic and systematic leadership approaches is a catalysing principle to other principles. For other Total Quality Management principles to be implemented, the organization require effective strategic and systematic leadership. The study recommends that organizations should design a management framework that embraces principles of Total Quality Management in order to improve performance. Management should address barriers hindering the implementation of Total Quality Management. This require reliable strategic leadership in place.

    The influence of motivation on organizational performance in public corporations: a case of National Insurance Corporation (NIC).

    The study examined the influence of motivation on organisational performance at National Insurance Corporation (NIC). The specific objectives of the study included; to determine how reward and recognition impact the performance of employees; to examine the extent to which skills development affects the performance of employees; to evaluate the extent to which work life balance and working environment affects organizational performance; and to examine the role of leadership in influencing employee performance. The research philosophy is based on the assumption that, employee motivation is a key driver to enhance organisational performance. This assumption is based on the fact that, most organizations nowadays around the corporate world are allocating more resources in their human resources rather than capital structure, as they believe that employees are a significant base for improving their performance and achieve success. This study, thus empirically sought to find out the influence of motivation on organisational performance in order to materialise this assumption. This study used a pragmatic approach which involves multiple methods including quantitative and qualitative approaches. The researcher used primary data that was collected from employees at National Insurance Corporation at Dar es Salaam head office. The study also employed secondary data from NIC and TIRA. The research design employed was a case study research design. Primary data was gathered through questionnaires administered to 30 respondents. Once the data was collected was summarized and analyzed in tabular form, frequencies and histograms through the aid of a computer program in excel. The main findings of the study indicate that, effective motivation programs have greater likelihood of increasing employees’ morale, retention rate and productivity.It was further revealed that, motivation has been useful at NIC to improve organisational performance.The study recommends for a wider participation from the government and interested parties to support the insurance industry in making sure that motivation becomes successful in the sector. At the same time organizations are urged to put in place appropriate motivation of their employees in order to enhance skills utilization and ultimate organizational performance.

    The influence of strategic innovations on the performance of Mobile Telecommunication Companies in Tanzania: The case of Vodacom Tanzania PLC.

    The study focused on assessing the impact of strategic innovations on the performance of telecommunication companies in Tanzania whereby, it examined the impact of product strategic innovations, process strategic innovations, marketing strategic innovation and technology strategic innovations and how they impact organizational performances. The methodology adopted in the study included utilization of a quantitative research approach to assess how strategic innovation had been important in influencing organizational performance considering Vodacom as the case of the study. A total of 120 respondents participated in the study. Researcher adopted both randomly and purposive sampling because the selected respondents possess the required knowledge and information in answering research questions of the study. Data collected through questionnaires and interviews were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively through using SPSS where by the results were presented in Table form. The study’s findings showed that, both four reviewed strategic innovations aspects had very positive impact on the organization's performance. The findings revealed that through products strategies the organization can improve its new products ideas, can crated new products and even can put different products on portfolios also marketing strategies had been found to be very important as they help the organization in determining new promotion and marketing channels, come out with different pricing strategies even cost reductions. Furthermore, the findings reveal that the organization process strategies can help an organization on improving its organization structure, training, and other operations aspects and lastly the technological aspects were found very useful especially to telecommunication companies like Vodacom. The study recommends that, organizations need to consider these four very useful and if possible both of them need to be implemented together as they always depend on each other. The study recommends further the organization needs to have enough budget and a qualified team for the successful implementation of these strategies. Also due to the limitation of this study, the study recommended areas that need further research
